Aldolases catalyze the condensation of aldehydes with acetaldehyde to form chiral lactones with multiple chiral centers.

Chiral lactones are further oxidized and ring-opening reactions to obtain compounds containing multiple chiral centers (see above), which are important chiral units in organic synthesis.
