Transaminases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of an amino group between a ketone and a chiral amine or a keto acid and a chiral amino acid.

The transaminase-catalyzed transamination reaction with ketone or ketoacid as the substrate requires the participation of the cofactor pyridoxal phosphate and the amino donor. Common amino donors are alanine, isopropylamine and chiral α-phenylethylamine.
